I wish I knew this concept sooner. How to diversify your identity:
Principle-First
I identified as an athlete for the first 20 years of my life.
Then, I suffered a career-ending sports injury in college, and I was gutted.
Many people wrap up their entire identity in one dimension, like sports or work.
But this can make us fragile to external events.
Instead, you can diversify your identity to become more resilient.
SUPERHUMAN SCORING
In every edition of System Sunday, I assess the featured system across three superhuman dimensions: impact, setup, and maintenance.
Unlike your typical review, I focus on factors that influence personal growth. Get to know the evaluation system.
Impact (9.5/10)
I first came across the term identity diversification from my friend, Brad Stulberg.
Here are some of the benefits, in the words of Brad:
“Cultivating multiple parts of your identity will make you a stronger, happier, healthier, higher-performing, and more textured person.”
I love that word textured. You’ll enrich your life with a broader range of experiences, emotions, and connections.
Another benefit of diversifying your identity? It makes you more resilient to the inevitable ups and downs of life.
Think of it like diversifying an investment portfolio.
By not putting all your eggs in one basket, you can—as Sahir Maharaj says, “Protect yourself from the volatility of life’s challenges.”
Now, let’s chat about some practical tips.
Setup (8.5/10)
3 steps to get started:
1. Grab a pen and paper. A blank note on your phone or computer will also work!
2. Begin with introspection. Below are a few reflection prompts. (Btw, it’s okay if some of these questions don’t excite you. Focus on the ones that do.)
- Which new hobbies or skills do you want to try?
- Which relationships do you want to deepen?
- Which causes or community activities do you care about?
- Where do you want to travel? Which new cultures do you want to immerse yourself in?
3. Next, take small steps. Enroll in that pottery class, volunteer for that cause you care about, or plan that trip with friends you’ve always wanted. It’s about taking small actions that layer new dimensions to your identity.
The key here isn't to overwhelm yourself but to enrich your life with variety.
Maintenance (7.5/10)
Periodically assess your commitments. Ensure they're still serving you and not just consuming your time. Remember, the goal is enrichment, not exhaustion.
For more on identity diversification, I highly recommend reading Brad Stulberg's new book, Master of Change.
