Remembering Your Dreams
[6 Steps]
SUPERHUMAN SCORE: 8

How to remember your dreams (and the million-dollar ideas in them). The D.R.E.A.M.S. Method:
Principle-First
Some of the world’s greatest ideas have come from dreams:
- Paul McCartney – his song “Yesterday”
- Albert Einstein – Theory of relativity
- Mary Shelley – Frankenstein
Dreams are a window into your innermost thoughts.
Use this framework to unlock your full potential…
SUPERHUMAN SCORING
In every edition of System Sunday, I assess the featured system across three superhuman dimensions: impact, setup, and maintenance.
Unlike your typical review, I focus on factors that influence personal growth. Get to know the evaluation system.
Impact (8.5/10)
First, shout out to Jim Kwik for inspiring today’s newsletter.
I learned about the D.R.E.A.M.S. framework in his book Limitless.
(It’s a fun and actionable read for upgrading your brain and learning faster.)
Here’s how it works…
Setup (7.5/10)
D – Decide
The first step to decoding your dreams is to actively decide to remember them.
- Commit to recalling your dreams
- Learn the best framework to do it (Check. You’re reading it now!)
- Put it in writing
Unconscious habits require conscious decisions.
Your chances of recall will improve dramatically.
R – Record
Writing down your dreams trains your brain to become aware of them.
- Keep a dream journal
- Take notes when you wake up
- Write down as many details as you can
The more you journal, the better you’ll get at recalling events.
Note: It's important not to accept your dreams as absolute truth. After all, some ideas may be nonsensical. The point is to capture your dreams so you can later reevaluate them through a rational lens.
E – Eyes
After waking up, keep your eyes closed to help you reflect and remember your dreams.
- Relax
- Visualize the dream
- Recall the feelings you felt
Give yourself the time and space to remember your dreams fully—without getting distracted by the visuals around you.
A – Affirm
Say out loud: “I'll recall my dream,” before going to sleep.
- Speak the affirmation with conviction
- Use it to program your subconscious
- Repeat it until you fall asleep
Affirming your intention will program your subconscious mind to remember your dreams.
M – Manage
Establish a routine for deep and restful sleep.
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time
- Avoid screen time 1 hour before bed
- Read if you can't fall asleep
Here are more sleep tips in my recent newsletter on deep sleep.
Quality sleep = quality dreams = quality recall.
S – Share
Share your dreams with your friends and family.
This will help you:
- Remember them
- Reflect on the meaning
- Get a different perspective
Maybe keep the extra “personal” ones to yourself.
Maintenance (7.5/10)
Like any new habit, this one will take practice.
Try these helpful cues to keep you accountable:
- Keep a physical dream journal next to your bed.
- Do this with a friend, family member, or partner (so they ask you each morning what you dreamt about).
- Set an automatic reminder on your phone, prompting you to write it down when you wake up.
BRINGING IT HOME
Use the DREAMS framework to remember your dreams:
- D – Decide
- R – Record
- E – Eyes
- A – Affirm
- M – Manage
- S – Share
